Like most societies, Canada too makes distinctions between males and females in what is called a gender society; males commonly monopolize politics, and engage in activities that are considered more noteworthy (Fleras, 2012, p. 155 156). Females on the other hand are often expected to take on maternal and parental roles, however this is often seen as work that is not important within many societies (Fleras, 2012, p. 155 156). These expectations, compounded with the fact that females have constantly been denied rights; both in the past as well as the present, makes it clear that being a female in any part of the world is extremely difficult. In looking at the gender equality issues that exist, you must ask yourself: why would someone want to be female in a society that favours men? Well imagine if you were born a male, but felt like a female on the inside. Statistics show that this occurs in 1 in every 30,000 born males, and 1 in every 100,000 born females (Butcher, Mineka, Hooley, Taylor, Antony, 2010, p. 474). The term transgender has been used to represent individuals whose gender identity and/or gender expression do not match the biological gender they were born with (Stroumsa, 2014, p. 1).
